The story of the knife
2005-02-25 3:39 p.m.

When I got married (the first time) my little brother gave my wife and I a knife for a wedding present. It wasn’t just your run-of-the-mill knife. It was a big knife. The blade was about 12-inches long and looked kind of like a rather large Bowie knife. My brother thought it was the coolest gift you could give anyone. (He was 12 at the time.) My first wife and I voted it the most interesting wedding present we received. Though rarely used, that knife is something I’ve always kept. It is also one of the few items I have from my first marriage. When packing or cleaning I always decide to keep it. At our new home the knife resides on my workbench in the garage with the rest of my tools.

Last night Marathon Girl asked me to cut down the boxes that my weight bench came in and put them in the garbage can. I grabbed the knife from the workbench and went to work cutting up the boxes and putting them in the garbage can. When the work was completed, I put the knife on the trunk of my car, dragged the garbage can to the curb and cleaned up the last shards of boxes.

This morning while driving to work, other drivers gave me weird looks when they passed. For the first time in, well, months, no one tailgated me. I really didn’t think anything about it until I arrived at work. I went to place something in my trunk and to my surprise I saw the knife sitting on my trunk in exactly the same place I put it in last night. Somehow this knife managed to stay on the trunk of my car despite driving 15 miles to work at 70 miles per hour. (That explains the looks other drivers were giving me.)

There’s no point denying it. It looks like this knife and I are going to spend the rest of our lives together – as long as the highway patrol doesn’t pull me over and find the knife in my trunk.

Marathon Girl and I are celebrating our second anniversary this weekend! Hope you all have a good weekend too!
