Getting out just in time and a Christmas Eve incident
2004-12-27 3:21 p.m.
We’re leaving just in time. The long range forecast calls for a series of snow storms to hit Utah starting Wednesday night. (Sorry Skibigsky.) We’re scheduled to fly to Houston Thursday morning. Meanwhile the long range forecastin Houston calls for some rain and temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Though it may be a little on the hot side when it comes to the marathon but should be nicer than running in snow. If it’s too nice down there, we may not come back. The weather was quite pleasant this morning, however. Temperatures were in the 40s and by the time I completed the second mile I had to take off my sweatshirt to avoid overheating. No complaints though. Running is more enjoyable in warm weather. *** Much to our surprise, Aidan showed interest in most of the toys we got him for Christmas. We thought he’d be more fascinated with the wrapping paper and boxes than the actual toys. For the most part though he seems to enjoy what we bought him – especially the ones that make noise. The rest of the holiday weekend was very nice. We spent Christmas Eve with my family and Christmas Day with Marathon Girl’s clan. For the most part it was pleasant and uneventful. Despite eating large quantities of good Christmas food, I managed to avoid any weight gain. Marathon Girl actually lost weight (which isn’t too surprising considering how hard and fast she runs every day.) We were able to catch up on some much needed sleep and even Aidan was nice enough to sleep in an hour on Christmas Day. The only little hiccup of the entire weekend happened Christmas Eve. My family was sitting around the living room having a good time and chatting. I was talking about a book I was excited to read and said how excited I was to read it with Marathon Girl. Only instead of saying Marathon Girl’s real name, the name of my first wife slipped out. Oops. This is only the second time this has happened since we were married. The room got a little quiet for a second. I corrected myself and mouthed “I’m sorry” to Marathon Girl. Marathon Girl mouthed back “It’s OK” and the evening went on like nothing had happened. On the way home that evening Marathon Girl asked me why it had happened. “I don’t know,” I said. “It just slipped out.” We drove in silence for a few minutes. “Are you upset?” I finally asked. Marathon Girl shook her head. “No. These things happen once in a while. It comes with the territory.” The rest of the drive home I thought about how much our relationship has grown. When I last made this slip about 18 ago, Marathon Girl was devastated. Now we simply smile at it. I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful, understanding person as Marathon Girl as my wife. I’m excited to spend the next year and many, many others with her.
