sensual running and a friend's new baby

There’s something sensual about running. Running is about gasps of breath, sweat, and repetitive body movements – all associated with intimacy. Like any intimate act, you learn a lot about another person when you run together. Between breaths snippets of conversation emerge. The talking helps pass the time but also show where our intimacies lie. There are things you say during a run that you wouldn’t say otherwise. It was those early morning long runs that Marathon Girl and I had together when we were first dating that helped me realize how perfect we are for each other.

I ran 12 miles with Marathon Girl yesterday. Considering that in the last few months I’ve only run between four and five miles a day, it was quite an accomplishment. Originally it was my intent to run the first six miles with her but as we came upon mile six I told her I’d run with her until the end. It was one of those rare days when I had energy to run for hours. It was one of those days when Marathon Girl was willing to run at my pace (just under eight minutes a mile). I miss running with Marathon Girl every morning. Now that Aidan’s part of life, our running schedules are different – I run before work and Marathon Girl runs during the day. That’s why I treasure our run yesterday: It was our time to reconnect.

Some close friends had their baby via C-section this morning. There was a message awaiting us on our phone after we returned from church informing us that their daughter, Bethany, was born at 11:54 a.m.

This was an exciting and scary time for them. They’ve known for months that she was going to be born with some of her organs outside her body (I forget the word to describe this problem.) It can be fixed with a surgery or two and in the long run their daughter should be fine. However she’s going to require at least 2-3 months of hospitalization. Right now, both Bethany and Suzi are doing well.

When I talked to the exhausted father this evening, he said both Bethany and her mother were doing well. Hopefully the surgery will be successful and Bethany will be doing even better tomorrow. Our prayers are with them and hope in hopes that everything goes well with them.
