Busy at work, housing troubles and Running Fast

It’s been ages since I’ve updated. Thanks for all the notes asking if all is well. It is. There’s a myriad number of reasons for my brief absence in Diaryland. But since I find myself with a brief moment, I’ll try to recap the last two and a half weeks.

Work has entered the busy season. Our integration rooms are packed full of supercomputers. It’s fun to watch them slowly be built up and tested. Our biggest trade show is next month which keeps the whole marketing staff busy in preparation. In addition I’ve been tasked with ghost writing a column for one the company’s executives for a prestigious business magazine. I write articles like this all the time but always seem to develop writer’s block when it’s for a well known publication. For some reason I think that because the magazine is so big and popular that there’s no way I could be writing for it. It’s silly, I know. I better overcome it soon however because the copy is due Friday afternoon. (On the bright side, most of my other assignments have been put on hold so I can compete the article.)

I’ve also teamed up with a graphic designer friend for my first Website freelance project. We’re creating a web site for one of the doctor’s offices in town. The GD is designing it and I’m implementing it and doing all the backend stuff. It will be a lot of work but also a great learning experience and a ton of fun. I’m hoping we do a good enough job that it leads to more freelance work in the future.

Marathon Girl and I have been busy with the house for all the wrong reasons. We had a new refrigerator delivered and installed a few days after it closed. The installers it hooked the water up to the refrigerator wrong. The next day we discovered that our kitchen had been flooded. All things considered damage was minimal. But the kitchen floor and part of the living room carpet has to be replaced which delayed our moving by a few weeks. Fortunately we don’t have pay for any of the work and are excited for it to be completed and have our house complete. Despite this minor setback we love our house. The neighbors we’ve met seem friendly and the community is nice and quiet – just the way we like it.

In a moment of quiet reflection soon after we discovered the flooding I realized how much better I deal with situations like this than I would have, say, three years ago. Three years ago I wouldn’t have handled a situation like this very well. I would have felt awful for days afterward and been miserable to be around. Now…now things are different. Obviously it was a little upsetting to discover that the house you just bought had suffered some damage but I’ve been able to handle it more like a minor annoyance. Marathon Girl and Aidan were well and safe and with the exception of some carpet and flooring, nothing else was damaged. It was a little humbling to see how far I’ve progressed and developed when it comes to things like this. I know I can even do better but it’s nice to see that I’ve made progress.

Marathon Girl continues to amaze me by how quickly she’s returned to her pre-pregnancy running form. Right now she could probably run a marathon faster than three and a half hours. We think there’s a good chance that she could run extremely well in the Texas Marathon on January 1. Her quiet goal is to qualify for the Boston marathon and run it in 2006. (She qualified several years ago but her time expired soon after we were married.)

Aidan is the most wonderful kid. He can roll over extremely well and uses this ability to retrieve toys that are just out of reach. He wants to sit up so bad but becomes frustrated that he can’t do it yet. Still the kid never gives up and every day becomes a little better at it. He is hours and hours of fun. We both feel extremely blessed to have him as part of our family.

That’s it for now. This article will keep me busy the rest of the week. But next week I’ll be back with more regular updates.
