Our place, bank paper work, and Houston
2004-09-14 9:23 a.m.

Yesterday we closed on our house.

This afternoon we’ll receive the keys.

Tonight we’ll drive over to our place (I can’t believe it! Our place!) and make a list of things we need to purchase.

This weekend we’ll start moving in.

It’s amazing how much of the paper work you have to sign at closing is for the bank. When I sold my last house, the buyer paid cash for it. We met at a title company, signed a couple a title documents and a tax form and were out the door in less than 10 minutes.

But banks love paper work so we had to sign all types of documents. My favorite was the general contract to purchase document. It had a section in there on environmental responsibility and how that I was not allowed to bring or dispose toxic waste on the property. Yeah, I almost refused to sign the loan when I read that. I was really looking forward to brining barrels of toxic waste home and storing them in the garage.

Still, it was considerably less paperwork than I had to sign when I bought my first house. Of course the first house was a bank repo and I didn’t have much as far as a down payment so I guess more paperwork would be required.

Anyway…I don’t know if it was excitement or the fact that I just signed my life away but I had trouble sleeping last night. It seems like all I could think about was the house and how exciting it was going to be to take care of our new place.

Thanks to all those who signed the guestbook or sent me e-mails about Houston. Everyone seemed to say the same thing about Houston:

• It’s not representative of the rest of Texas.

• It’s hotter than hell. (Even in December/January???)

• The Texans football team sucks (I knew that) but I should go to the NFL game anyway.

• San Antonio is a much better place to do touristy stuff.

Despite this most everyone included several links that listed things to do in Houston. Right now we’re planning out what it is we want to do. Much to my surprise, my father-in-law is really excited about going to an NFL game. Thankfully the Texans are terrible so obtaining tickets doesn’t look like it’s going to be difficult.

Anyway…that’s all for now. Need to get lots of work done today.
