Thunderstorms and an annoucement

It’s been a cool summer for northern Utah. We have yet to have a day where the temperature rises to 100° F. As long as I’ve lived here I don’t think I’ve ever had a summer where we’ve gone this far without at least one harsh, hot day. It’s a nice change though. No oppressive heat in the morning and by afternoon and large puffy Nimbostratus clouds roll in from the west, block the sun, and keep temperatures warm and pleasant. By evening dark Nimbus and Cumulonimbus clouds roll in. They diffuse light of the setting sun into rare shades of red and hues of yellow. And then there’s the rain. There’s nothing like a summer storm in Utah. You know when is coming because in a moment the sun is swallowed up by dark clouds. The wind starts to blow and seconds later the rain falls and falls and falls. Within minutes flashes of lighting reveal puddles on the sidewalks and on the roads. The gutters overflow with water. Then just like that, sometimes five, sometimes 10 minutes later, the rain stops. The storm moves on and everything smells clean. That’s what it was like this evening – the rain, the lightning, and wind. Usually Aidan goes to bed without any problems. But tonight with the rain beating against the window and the soft growl of thunder filling his room he wouldn’t settle down. I picked him up and sat in the living room with Marathon Girl – lights off and the blinds open – so we could watch the storm. Once in my arms though Aidan calmed down and seemed content to watch the storm. I wish all summers were this cool and pleasant. I wish every night a thunderstorm would blow the dust away and leave clear puddles on the road to run though the next morning. ***
