Running too fast and Aidan grows up

When it comes to running, I have two bad habits – one of which I blame on Marathon Girl. Before I met Marathon Girl, I was just your average jogger, content to run three or four miles at a leisurely pace. After I started running with her, I picked up her habit for turning every run into a competition. For example, if she spots another jogger that’s about a half mile ahead, she’ll pick up the pace and try to pass them. This is fine if you happen to be a finely tuned athlete like Marathon Girl. It’s another thing if most of your running for the past six months has returned to the “casual jogger” level.

This morning I noticed a jogger about a quarter mile ahead. He was running at a decent clip but I knew I could catch him. I picked up the pace quite a bit and about half a mile later I was just a few steps from passing him. Well the guy looks over his shoulder and notices me coming up on him so he starts running faster. For the next quarter mile it turned into a foot race until I finally managed to pass him. At that point we exchanged nods and waves and at the next intersection he turned left and I turned right.

Unfortunately at this point I was two miles from home and had spend most of my energy trying to boost my running ego. Let’s just say the last two miles home were pretty slow and painful.

I can’t wait to run with Marathon Girl again so she can kick my butt back into shape.

Yesterday was a day that Marathon Girl and I noticed a big change in Aidan. It seemed like he was much more aware of the two of us and always wanted at least one of us to be in his sight. If we walked into the other room, he’d crane his neck until he couldn’t see us. Then the crying would start. As soon as one of us walked back in the room, he’d calm down and follow us with his eyes as we walk around the room. In the past he’s been content to sit there and hasn’t seemed to care where we were.

What a fun baby.
