fatherhood and book update
2004-06-16 2:20 p.m.

Aidan is sleeping better. The last few nights he’s made it four or five hours at a time before waking up. The challenge has been getting him to actually go to sleep at a reasonable hour. Usually it’s 11 p.m. or later before he finally gets the idea that it’s time to go to bed. Still, he’s so fun to be with.

He’s starting to put on some baby fat and he’s much more active and alert than he was when he was born. Sometimes though he’ll stare at me with his blue eyes for 10 or 15 minutes. I’ll look back at him and wonder just what’s going through his mind and what he finds so fascinating about me. I wonder if he has any idea that I’m his father.

People keep asking if there’s any news on my book. Unfortunately, I have no update at this time. Just waiting to hear back from agents and/or publishers who might be interested. I’ll keep you apprised of things as they develop. I am taking this waiting time however to rewrite parts of it and make them stronger.

Because my parents are artists, I was introduced to a lot of them growing up. There was this one painter who would keep working on some of his painting years after he “finished it.” At the time I thought it was strange that he would want to keep working something from time to time that was supposedly done. What I realize now is that they were looking for perfection in their work. Now I find myself rewriting parts of my book five, even six times because I want to make it better. Though I think at some point you have to "complete" a project/painting/book/short story etc., I can better understand the artist’s quest for perfection he tried to achieve. Though I don’t know if this book will ever be perfect (it’s my first one) I do want it to be good.
