Non stress test and raising a family in today's world

Went with Marathon Girl for a scheduled non-stress test to make sure everything was alright with her and the baby. Baby is doing great. Marathon Girl is also well though she’d be doing quite a bit better if she’d stay in bed more. (Marathon Girl, if you’re reading this you’re not lying down. Lie back down and finish your book.) We have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow morning and we’re kind of hoping he’ll let us know if he’s going to induce Marathon Girl 10 days to a week before her due date. *** With the baby’s due date becoming closer and closer, Marathon Girl and I have had a lot of talks about raising the baby. Sunday we talked for over an hour about how we wanted to raise him. Marathon Girl mentioned that sometimes it’s frightening to think of all the horrible things going on in the world and how we could raise a child in what sometimes appears to be a frightening and dangerous place. To some extent we live in frightening times. Yet every generation has had to face some sort of trial. (I wonder, for example, what kind of thoughts were going through my grandparents mind as they raised families during The Great Depression and World War II.) Yes the world has problems. But the world will always have problems. Though hard to tell from our current perspective, most of the problems that make the news are fleeting and temporary. For the most part the world is a much safer, a more prosperous place then it was 100, 50, or even 20 years ago. I’d much rather be raising a family today then a generation or two ago. All that parents can do is set a good example and teach them right from wrong then hope that when children start to make decisions, they makes the right ones. (Though I’m sure I’ll have plenty of sleepless nights worrying about him.) Thankfully I have a wife who understands this and will do a great job of being a good mother and example to our son. Hopefully I can be a good dad.
