About 1.5 miles uphill and another 1.6 miles down. The run took us down tree lined roads, past the football stadium and a hospital. It was a beautiful but difficult run. Despite the difficulty, I gave it everything I had and finished the 5K in 24:10 – just under eight minutes a mile – and 45 seconds slower than last year’s time. And I still managed the fifth fastest time in my age group (25-29). It was a race I was very pleased with considering I’m not as in as good shape this year as last (when I was training for a marathon).

In the end it was the uphill that took its toll. My legs not quite as strong as last year had considerable difficulty keeping a steady pace as I trudged uphill. I fought the need to slow down or pause to catch my breath. I kept pace with another runner during the more difficult part of the uphill telling myself that if this runner could make it, I could too.
Hours later, every muscle in my body ached from the morning’s pace. The pain was a reward for giving 100 percent. And I wouldn’t have traded hurt for anything. If anything it made me want to run another 5K soon.

Marathon Girl walked the course with her mom. After she finished she said she didn’t even feel tired. It’s amazing how well she’s kept herself in shape during the pregnancy. Even though she hasn’t been able to run she’s tried to do some type of exercise for about an hour a day. I don’t know of any other 36-week pregnant women who could have walked the course. I can tell she misses running though and wished she could have run. I don’t think she’ll have much difficulty returning to form after she has the baby.
